Carrot Harvest 2015

Here is a short video of carrot harvest 2015:

Rows of carrots

The long rows of carrots. This year we rented several acres of sandy land a couple of miles south of our house. The carrots were planted with a one row garden seeder. Weeding took place on hands and knees down all the long rows. Needless to say, it took a long time!

Through out the season the carrots were watered with a high-pressure sprinkler system from the nearby Arma slough.

Getting ready for harvesting.

Getting ready for a day of harvesting. The harvester pulls the carrots, takes the tops off, and then conveys them over to crates that we built to store the carrots in.

Big carrots!

We had some big carrots, some were much larger than these average sized ones!

Carrot washer.

We built a carrot washer a few years ago but it was starting to need repairs on a regular basis plus getting small for our needs. Because of this, we built this new washer which is about 3 times as big as the old one.

Dumping.

Joshua and Jesse also built a pallet dumper to dump crates of carrots. The pallet dumper is attached to the skidsteer which we purchased, and allows us to rotate the crates. In this picture Andrew is dumping carrots into tote bags for storage. We were thankful to have finished carrot harvesting on October 26th.

Pickin’ Potatoes!

Last week Tuesday we took over 3000 pounds of potatoes out of the ground.

We now dig the potatoes with a plow. It’s not as back-breaking as the fork is, and the potatoes don’t get wrecked as easily.

Only about 10 rows left to go! We dug for over 7 hours. The last while we had to use headlamps, because it was so dark.

Potatoes in shop- Oct- 2015

Some of the potatoes in the shop. Now we are putting them in boxes and crates for storage!

Chicks to Chickens

On June 5th, we got about 450 chicks. They were really cute yellow fuzz balls but they don’t stay that way as you will be able to see in the pictures.

Resting

What are you doing?

“What are you doing here?”

The Chickens

The chickens now.

The pens

The 4 chicken pens. The chickens are moved each day to a new patch of land so they can enjoy the weeds, bugs, etc.

Here is a story I wrote about the sea container.

Conceptualize a whopping thundering tractor motor into your yard and pitch a rusty 53 foot insulated receptacle on your grounds and then compel you to dish out $... Well, that's what happened on June 16th. The senescent guys bought it for storing carrots.
Jesse had been poking around at ways for storing carrots because the existing facilities were getting to unpretentious for their firm, inasmuch as the shop has a processing chamber. Jesse ran across a 53’ insulated sea container and the levy came across good so they procured it.
They ordered it through a chap in Montreal and then got it rolled in to Saskatoon, nonetheless one phenomenon came into the way, they thought it was a place in Saskatoon and they didn’t know if they would pay for it to come to Rosthern. But it all got cleared up at 12:45 when we got a phone call from the fella who had it at the gas station at Rosthern!
The fella conveyed it to the end of the driveway and stopped, then we came and gave him two options of where to drive. He picked going down the trail and driving across the carrot patch. Once he had done so, he backed up to the place where the guys had chosen to get it pitched, took off the straps, and remotely controlled the tires farther up the trailer and then lifted the trailer so the crate would come off, he then drove off with the check in front of his eyes!
I anticipate this container will work kindly for the guys!
